The role of the Quantity Surveyor is to manage all the costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, right through from the initial calculations to the final figures. The surveyor will seek to minimise the costs of the project and enhance the value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Many of these requirements are specified by statutory building regulations, which the surveyor needs to understand and adhere to.
A Quantity Surveyor may work for either the client or the contractor and can be based in an office or on-site. The surveyor will be involved in a project from the start, preparing estimates and costs of the work. Whilst the project is in progress, the quantity surveyor will keep track of any variations to the contract that may affect costs and create reports to show profitability.
Quantity Surveyors can also be known as construction cost consultants or commercial managers.
